Race Engineering: A Tyre Pressure Strategy In The Wet

A good tyre pressure strategy in the wet is to inflate your tyres to your target hot pressure.

Thoughts on why this might work: (This is my empirical experience, I don’t really know … ?‍♂️)

  • Maximise tyre contact patch –> Tyre not expanding as much in wet
  • Increase stiffness –> More work –> More tyre temp to compensate for wet
  • Tread block on tyre may open up –> Less aquaplaning
  • Sidewall stiffness is higher –> Less aquaplaning

Reference: target hot pressures.
